Wastewater surveillance is the most cost effective way to monitor the spread of infectious diseases such as COVID-19, influenza, RSV, mpox and N5N1.
That's why Ontario’s Public Health Emergencies Service Advisory Committee recommended in 2023 that wastewater surveillance be continued for the foreseeable future. It allows hospitals and public health agencies to better plan health care resources during public health emergencies, disease outbreaks and pandemics, and it helps Ontarians make more informed choices about their own health.
