LONDON - MPP Peggy Sattler (London West) released the following statement responding to reports of the precarious financial position of Queen's University:
"Instead of focusing on their new semester, Queen's students are worried about their futures. Looming cuts and layoffs will not only devastate jobs and the lives of students but cause ripple effects across the Kingston area and its economy. Universities are anchor institutions in our communities.
“Queen’s is one of the most respected universities in the country, known for its 2015 Nobel prize in physics and amazing cancer and mental health research. The loss of one of the province's oldest, most venerated institutions would be noticed on the international stage.
“This dire situation at Queen’s University is the direct result of the government’s deep cuts and damaging policies, which have been nothing less than an attack on postsecondary education. Tuition hikes aren’t the answer during an affordability crisis. It is well past time this government pulls its heads out of the sand and significantly increases investment in our public universities and colleges.”
