London MPPs support new Our London Family bill

Published on November 22, 2021

LONDON – MPPs Terence Kernaghan (London North Centre), Teresa Armstrong (London-Fanshawe) and Peggy Sattler (London West) released the following statement on the partnership with National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM) to develop legislation to combat Islamophobia:

“We continue to share in the grief of London’s Muslim community and mourn the lives of the Afzaal family. Muslims here in London should never have to fear for their safety because of who they are or what community they belong to.

With Islamophobia and white supremacy on the rise, we have heard loud and clear from Muslim community members and faith leaders that words are not enough and that we need real action to stop hate.

We stand in solidarity with the Muslim community and our new bill with the National Council of Canadian Muslims will put into law the provincial recommendations made in the aftermath of the horrible attack.

London was rocked by the horrific hate crime and came together to mourn and lift each other up. It’s time for us all to rally again and take the next steps forward, in partnership with the NCCM, to fight and defeat Islamophobia.”

The bill, Our London Family Act, will be tabled in early 2022. It will address the calls to action directed at provincial governments in the NCCM’s recommendations to the National Summit on Islamophobia.
