Wynne Liberals Leave London Facing the Third Highest Youth Unemployment Rate in the Country

London, June 10, 2016 – Peggy Sattler, NDP MPP for London West and Critic for Training, Colleges, and Universities, expressed concern about the May 2016 job numbers released today by Statistics Canada, which show that the Wynne Liberals continue to neglect Ontario’s youth – particularly those in London.

“For the third month in a row, London continues to rank among the top three cities in the country with the highest youth unemployment rate. In May, London’s youth faced the second highest youth unemployment rate in the province, and the third highest in the country. Despite this, the priority of the Wynne Liberals seems to be the Liberal party and not the young people of Ontario. Increasingly, Londoners, and especially young people in our community, are feeling like they’re being left to fend for themselves by their government,” Sattler said.

The actions taken by consecutive Liberal governments have done little to address high youth unemployment in the province, which continues to top the provincial rate. In May 2016, London posted the second highest youth unemployment rate in the province, and the third highest in the country at 18.1 per cent.

“Premier Wynne and the Liberals are making matters worse. Instead of helping young people, they’ve let them fall behind. Instead of reducing student debt, they’ve allowed young people to accumulate massive student loans. Instead of creating more opportunities, they’ve watched as our youth struggle to find good jobs. The people of London deserve better from their government.”
