QUEEN’S PARK – MPP Peggy Sattler (London West) called on the government to commit to an immediate increase in public funding for post-secondary institutions struggling to stay afloat.
“Years of cuts from successive governments have left our post-secondary institutions starved for resources and now they are on the brink,” said Sattler. “Many of our world-class colleges and universities are facing deficits, putting the sector and our communities at risk.”
Ontario’s colleges and universities are at a breaking point following decades of chronic underfunding and years of declining provincial grants.
In November, the Blue Ribbon Panel recommended a significant and immediate increase in public funding. With the recent federal cap on international study permits, the urgency has never been greater.
“College and university students are already struggling with cuts to OSAP and cuts to campus supports and services," said Sattler. "They should not be expected to cover this government's failure to properly fund post-secondary education with tuition increases".
“I’m calling on the government to immediately provide the public investment necessary for colleges and universities to continue delivering high-quality education to our students.”
